Mission Statement | [edit] |
The Houston Wiki addresses unmet needs of the Houston community. The Houston Wiki is not intended to compete with Wikipedia or other user-driven formats for information about the well-known aspects of Houston. If you want to read about the Astros, see
Wikipedia. Restaurant reviews? See
Yelp. We complement sites such as these.
We want to build a more informed citizenry and a closer community. In such a large city, it's easy to be overwhelmed by a sense of community-obscuring anonymity. Houston is not just a place to work - it's our home.
What are these unmet needs? Here are a few. Please add to this list!
-
Local businesses, politics, people, art, and cultural landscape
-
Neighborhood, student (all levels), ethnic, common interest, religious/spiritual, volunteer and civic organizations
-
Community projects, public spaces, venues for dates
-
Detailed information on housing, schools, libraries, etc.
-
Local research & development
Hints for Editing
A good place to start is by checking out the Houston Wiki Guide.
A Wiki is a linked set of pages that anybody can edit and contribute to if they have the time, access to internet, and a computer.
Wikipedia is the prime example of a successful wiki project.
If you want to practice editing you can play around in the Wiki Sand Box, or you may first want to check out our FAQ. We also have a list of All Pages in the wiki.
Feel free to make new pages — and try to remember to link them. Also, if you don't know where to start or don't have any ideas, check out To Do.
To see the most recent edits made you can look at the Recent Changes page. Also, be sure to check your userpage as people will at times leave you comments on there.
